I was entertained by the first instalment of Lost Cosmonaut, which is being serialised on Radio 4. I sympathise with his description of buying a railway ticket at a Russian railway station. I’ve probably only done it once, when we went from Petersburg to Novgorod – or at least I watched Olya doing it – [...]

Russia and Finland

Found a great source of historical information about north-western Russia www.around.spb.ru and its relationship with neighbouring countries. I learn, amongst other things, that in the forests of the Karelia one can still find stones marking the border of 1323 between Novgorod and Sweden. Also found this nice, hi-res tourist map of the Leningrad region.

There are more than a few interesting links at the mighty SovLit.com website. One such is Great songs from the soviet past, which even includes a couple of Beatles songs in Russian. From there, we can also find our way to another collection of Russian music in MP3 format, at ??????????. Must have a listen [...]

I haven’t tasted anything as more-ish for a long time, as these cranberries in a sugar shell. They are made by Кондитерская фабрика “Ударница”, ул. Шаболовка 13, Moscow, and if anyone can tell me how to get hold of them in London I’ll be forever in your debt. Come on Fabrika Udarnitsa, start shipping them [...]

Double Bassist

Greatly enjoyed assisting Maggie Williams with interpreting and translating for her interviews with renowned Russian double-bassists Lev Rakov and Rustem Gabdullin. The finished articles will be published in the Summer 2004 edition of The Double Bassist magazine.

Who’s this little fellow? You probably know him in a different guise: it’s Winnie The Pooh in Russian. He certainly doesn’t look much like anything out of Disney, nor the original Shepard drawings. He was created by Fyodor Khitruk in 1969 for the Soviet animation company Soyuzmultfilm in 1969. The stroies are essentially the same; [...]

Who is Bezbozhnik?

In 1991, I was given a print of a superb old David Low cartoon, “Ya Bezbozhnik” (“I am an atheist”). I don’t think I’m an atheist (so I suppose must, therefore, be an agnostic), but it’s a great picture. I haven’t seen it anywhere else, and need to make a new scan to add to [...]

I was recently asked for some advice on how to get a visa for Russia. I’ve done this a few times now, so I don’t usually have any problems — no more, at least, than the Russian system imposes on everyone. Unusually, it was a Russian who wanted the advice, since his Russian passport has [...]
